Thank you, you triggered me to start remembering - I am going to have to take a drive. There are so many fuzzy memories from the early 60’s. Have to go and look around
I love this kind of personal insight into history and culture. Do you plan on interviewing anyone else like this in the future? A neighbour or local friends?
Absolutely loved this. The format works beautifully and offers the kind of insight we rarely get as foreigners. A fascinating window into how life in China has changed over the past 40 years, not just in terms of cities and buildings, but in the shape of family, memory, and expectations. Really powerful stuff.
Thanks Nico, great questions. She really doesn’t remember the songs, but classical piano, and a famous female Taiwan singer Denglijun (邓丽君)comes to mind. She might have been cassettes though…. I’m glad you asked the second, it is more about my freely mixing temple and mosque. Chinese has separate words for Buddhist temple and Muslim mosque.
1) What music was popular on the radio with young people back then? And what music was on the old records she borrowed? I never saw vinyl in China of course, but love collecting it and had no idea it was even a format available over there at that time.
2) I'm interested if your wife's use of the word temple over mosque. Is this a conscious distinction?
This was so lovely! I loved learning more about your wife and her journey :)
Thank you Breanna 💝this was a fun one to write. 🙏

Nice story! The format is interesting and appreciated, with the content very insightful! It is intruiging how religions differ between regions.
👌🏼❤️
Oh my god this is the best post ever I saw before, I love the question and The replies and true and looking like it was made up.
🙄
Ahh I loved this Paul! When you put your heart into your writing it’s magic. I like the fresh question format too. It’s timeless. ✨
Thank you so much! ☺️🙏💝 The response has been so encouraging, I am thinking how to continue it.

Thanks so much! The response has been so encouraging. Probably yes, likely more family, as a way of recording their stories.
Thank you both for opening that window. Fascinating.
Thank you, I’ll pass along the message ☺️🙏

Two questions, Paul:
1) What music was popular on the radio with young people back then? And what music was on the old records she borrowed? I never saw vinyl in China of course, but love collecting it and had no idea it was even a format available over there at that time.
2) I'm interested if your wife's use of the word temple over mosque. Is this a conscious distinction?
Thank you 🙏
