Interesting post! The force of the society is so strong on us individuals since we have been shaped unconsciously from young. Access to smartphones and social media accelerates this with most of us are leaning towards the same or similar taste.

We get conditioned to think that the pursuit of goodness, virtue can be postponed in our laser-like pursuit of wealth, accomplishments, and all things visible above everything else.

How do we encourage one another in the family, our neighborhoods to prioritize wisdom, well being not just for humans but for/with nature?

Thank you 🙏💖 Laozi appears to advocate for setting a good example and being confident that a good example will be returned. In that way, I do see that we find ourselves in company that reflects our values.

This concept is so important, Paul. I am convinced that a well functioning society starts with us. The more fulfilled we become, built on habits that matter, the better our society will become.

“Give respect to get respect”, I wish leaders found that approach a more natural path. Thanks, Annelie. 🙏💐

i wonder if the “enlightenment” he speaks of is akin to promethean enlightenment or the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil… the promises of more, of vast wealth and power. since the Dao’s function is that of return, such ambition will reap its toll. likewise, if one rejects such ambition, because return is the mode, through compassion and reflection, wealth and legitimacy in power can be achieved.

A good reading is perhaps "lead by example", not looking down on the people, as leaders with more information are often tempted to do, but see all as equals Giving respect to get respect. Sadly few people in positions of power or advantage seem to do this.
